Avoid Sprint’s new “Picture Mail” application Smart Devices

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

This includes any smart phone or Pocket PC.  DO NOT download the new picture mail application as it has numerous bugs and apparently takes an unreasonable amount of time to send a picture.  It apparently screws up your synchronization settings.

There are several options available one of which is sMMS Picture Mail Composer. (Alternate link)

The trick that I use (and will continue to use) is sending a vanilla e-mail to the picture mail address with a picture attached.

Works like a charm.

Mobile Development (General)

For some reason stuff like this never even dawned on me that it exists.  Then again until last year I didn’t know mobile devices existed that actually ran operating systems.

So here’s some non-Windows mobile developer stuff.

Do I need to write a custom control or what? Where is CheckedListBox?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Please see this post for an important update!

Do I need to write a custom control or what?

Still don’t understand why I cannot use CheckedListBox in Visual Studio when deploying to a Smart Device.

I can understand why Button.PerformClick isn’t available on Windows Mobile because it says so.  However, a CheckedListBox says it should be available to the Compact Framework.

In the meantime I’ve had time to make my first ever post at DaniWeb after being a member for over 6 years and truth be told it was a rather anticlimactic experience.  It’s currently been 3 days with no response and it’s actually #3 (and #4) on a Google search for “checkedlistbox unavailable.”

That’s sad in case you were wondering.

Anyway, in the meantime I tried resetting the toolbox and even went in search of these files which would have been here in Vista:

%appdata%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\9.0\

…but I didn’t find them.

Bluetooth ActiveSync’ing

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Hey many thanks to the cats over at Amset.info for providing fairly detailed instructions on using ActiveSync over Bluetooth.  All works well over here except I had to modify some stuff for it to actually work.

Seriously, the ONLY way I got it to work in Vista was this:

Yeah Amset, I bit off your clever watermark everything because people are asses and steal other people’s intellectual property.  Word.

OneNote

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Boy don’t I feel stupid!  For ages I’ve told the wife I should just purchase Microsoft Office OneNote and get it over (as I was never able to find an alternative that could decipher the OneNote Mobile format).  Then I start digging through old student software I purchased for like $5 to $16 a pop (and only because it was that cheap) and found OneNote 2007.

*sigh*

Anyway, see the bottom of this link for the REAL fix.  I didn’t have any problems installing OneNote 2007 last, but your mileage may vary.  I did have to perform this for another but in addition had to install OneNote Mobile from the application after setting up an ActiveSync partnership with their mobile device.

My first HTC Touch got OneNote Mobile in the Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM update and my second Touch already had OneNote Mobile installed (as it came standard with WM6.1 at this point).

I didn’t run into any problems with the aforementioned installation was the point of that gibberish.
