WinSock XP Fix

This one in particular has a specific fix from Microsoft.

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

Internet Connection Repair (ICR) Tool — This is a REALLY good one, but it tries to yank you into purchasing additional help. When it does that… run it again.

Here is the “isn’t guaranteed to work and never works after malware or virus corrupts your network” solution.

Firewall rundown

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

This one was pretty spot-on except for those firewall clients I did not recognize.

ZoneAlarm is complete junk.  I deal with it constantly denying my WiFi adapter a request from the router to authenticate and retrieve new IP settings.  No way to modify that behavior or disable and enable connection rules like denying connections from every IP but one or whatever.

Comodo was OK, but I thought I recalled problems with it.  Kerio is a good choice but I’m going to try Comodo again.

Vista has a problem identifying networks

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

So apparently DHCP isn’t good enough for Vista.  To alleviate the majority of problems I’ve witnessed and experienced from “limited connectivity” or “unidentified network(s)” simply manually set your connection settings and disable IPv6 on your adapter.

Wired connections evidently suffer from “power saving” causing funky problems so disable that as well if problem persists.
