Nice array of system utilities
Thursday, July 30th, 2009Most of these were garnered from “the How-To Geek” site.
Belarc is still one of the best all around utilities for creating a quick snapshot of your system.

I first learned of PureText from “the How-To Geek” site.
PureText – A very accurate and fast extraneous text stripper.
Everything — However, this application cannot search the contents of files. I know of two great utilities that can do just that for most files.
Locate32 — Written by a close acquaintance of mine, Janne Huttunen. I actually host the Locate32.net/.com sites.
File Finder is fast and well… FAST. David J. A. Grazio really hit it out of the park with this one.
From the actual Tech-Recipes (dot com) site I found an interesting method of extracting files from MSI files which brings me to a few other useful utilities I know of.
Universal Extractor
cabextract
CabExtract (1.02 as of this post)
Then there is “The best MSI Extractor” article by Julie Smith… smart chick whoever she is.
For the geeks you can “View and Extract CAB File Contents Programmatically.“ I found a related newsgroup (scraped) article that notes a few other links as well.
Now for CAB files I absolutely cannot do without MSCEInf (2.6 as of this post) (French homepage).
I mentioned some portable applications the other day. Here’s some more.
Tiny Apps — Not so much portable, but definitely small. And most are portable by sheer virtue.
nnSoft has the wonderful nnCron Lite which should not be missed.
NirSoft is filled with a ridiculous amount of awesome in-house freeware.
IRNIS hosts a slew of free goodies including XCSC, XCSV, and XFFF. Sorry, check there for the non-acronym versions.
Xtort is the host of Tiny USB Office (formerly Floppy Office). It is simply a combination of several awesome little utilities though.
Horst Schaeffer’s Widows Pages carries several lovelies like “Reminder.”
HFS (HTTP File Server)
AutoMen which is actually found at 64K.it but this post describes it better. This is a front-end for Mencoder.
CrispyBytes Development is home to two useful utilities: DateInTray and Clear Read-Only.
SDCC – Small Device C Compiler. For those mobile programmers out there.
Windows Vista Freeware Utilities List takes a special notice for a compilation of software that is “tiny, installation-free, portable, and freeware.”
Eolsoft sports one of the best software I’ve ever had on older systems: Winmail Opener which helps you crack open those pesky DAT files.
Fantastic Bits has loads of unique freeware. (Site in German.)
The next three are mail servers:
AXIGEN’s Office Edition is a simple Free Mail Server.
I think I’m digging hMailServer best.
Additional Mention:
Ardamax (dot com) has three extremely useful utilities.
I’ve personally used Hash and CD for years. I love the software here.
I ran across an old link where someone mentioned this was a register only product but the download links are here.
Additional Links:
The REALLY old link.
Jans Freeware Articles — I didn’t even know this was still active! Used to be one of my favorite sites until I gave up on Windows 95 and 98.
From ArGoSoft’s “Free Toys.”
I remember when EVE in its entirety was only 30 kilobytes, but regardless of the fact it has more than quadrupled in size (still under 200 kilobytes) it remains the absolute biggest “bang” for the “buck.”
Brainsick Patterns — No Code Relation is proudly powered by 220 volts and
WordPress.
Visualisation is taken care by Maryndor with his WPGlass theme.
