Repair Vista without a Disc

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Apparently it’s possible.

(I had forgotten where I originally found the ICRTool link, but in the meantime found it at Raymond.cc.)

XP to Vista

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Not that it was extremely hard to figure out, but:

Vista’s Users (Folder) Replace XP’s Documents and Settings

Here are a few additional notes on environment variables.

Vista Environment Variables — I get the feeling I’ve posted this one before.

XP Environment Variables — and perhaps this one too.

More on IDT, Vista and Google Talk

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Well, this first one is simply moronic…

http://groups.google.com/group/Finding-Solutions/browse_thread/thread/836f53fdaed196a9

I cannot recall if I saw this or not, so…

Using Windows Vista, there is no ‘Google Talk’ plug-in in Windows Media Player

If you’re using Windows Vista and can’t find the ‘Google Talk’ plug-in in Windows Media Player, please uninstall Google Talk and reinstall by running as administrator.

Here’s someone experiencing the same problem it appears, and of course similar moronic replies ensue.

What is particularly disheartening is the fact the response has absolutely no value, no real information and is vague at best — yet “+2 other people say this answers the question.”

Pfft!

IDT High Definition Audio Codec and Vista

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

While not directly related to my scenario I thought I’d post this anyway.

http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/32192642/idt–audio–idt-high-d.aspx

What does pertain to me is the fact that applications like Google Talk and Gizmo5 refuse to work in Vista.  Gizmo5 actually tells me that there is no “audio input or output device.”

Google Talk just hangs doing nothing.  Of course, both applications bugger the audio until I reboot.  I’ve NO CLUE what is going on and the numerous sites that I’ve visited on the subject have pretty much proven useless.

I often wonder why I don’t kill the Vista installation on this laptop and install XP Professional.

EDIT:  Throwing this one in to keep track of it as well.

Internal Error 2738

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Definitely a great Vista tip.  I felt like I blundered across a gold brick when I found this one.  This has plagued almost every single MSI I tried to install.  The latest of which is the Windows Mobile SDK.

Vista doens’t like my Administrator account editing my own files

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

If you run across the problem that Vista calls every file you attempt to edit a read-only one, from a command prompt type, “takeown /?”.  The rest is yours to enjoy.

Vista has a problem identifying networks

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

So apparently DHCP isn’t good enough for Vista.  To alleviate the majority of problems I’ve witnessed and experienced from “limited connectivity” or “unidentified network(s)” simply manually set your connection settings and disable IPv6 on your adapter.

Wired connections evidently suffer from “power saving” causing funky problems so disable that as well if problem persists.
